We were joined by FedEx to help the students at Saffron Walden County High School learn about Road Safety over a couple of days. FedEx has been involved with the local Motorwise Road Safety at Carver Barracks for the last 14 years. The modules which have been replicated have included Drink & Drugs Behavior when behind the wheel, Fire & Police, Basic Car Maintenance, FedEx ‘Blind Spots ‘on LGV’s (i.e. Mercedes-Benz Fleet Vehicle allocation), Driving Schools in attendance for their very first induction / attempt driving on the airfield in Wimbish.
The Students were allowed to drive on airfield with driving instructors & experience firsthand the characteristics of off-road so they were aware early on what was involved.
We took a new 38-tonne FedEx Mercedes-Benz Actros Truck & Trailer from their base at Stansted Airport to exhibit in actual school. Tricky manoeuvring to get in place – however early arrival enabled prime position near school pavilion and playing fields. Once the LGV had been positioned at an angle – a car was parked by the side to demonstrated the ‘blind spots’ when an Artic Truck is turning, and more importantly, where not to be!
This practical demo with the Mercedes-Benz Truck enabled us to get all the students in small groups to get into the cab and experience ‘first hand’ what professional truck drivers can see & what they can’t. This practical demo attracted a lot of attention and the comments received from all groups when seated in cab after explanation proved that this involvement does actually work! There was also an explanation about Mercedes-Benz Trucks' excellent safety features, such as, Active Brake Assist, Lane Keeping Assist & the Diesel Particulate Filter contribution for the environment
Many of the students are aware of LGV's but actually experiencing first hand, they were able to observe possible hazards faced daily by professional LGV drivers when not using all 6 of the mirrors correctly. It certainly raises their awareness especially as a majority of the Sixth Form Students were soon to start their driving lessons
As this was not a classroom based session – yet practical ‘hands on’ experience with a Mercedes-Benz Truck and Trailer – it has always been received well! To finish the FedEx & Mercedes-Benz set, the students sat in the pavillion and completed a series of Highway Code and safety questions. We collected the scores and were able to present the 4 highest score winners with a Mercedes-Benz holdall each filled with Mercedes-Benz goodies, donated by S & B Commercials.
This was done in the main hall with 350 Sixth Form Students, Teachers & Head Teachers. As a Transport Trainer & Assessor for FedEx Express – Robert Alcock passionately believes in this small contribution they make – so it raises the Students Awareness, understanding of the vital role LGV’s play and their own safety on the road’s for the future.
Without the kind support of Mercedes-Benz, FedEx & Volunteer’s – these very worthwhile events would never have materialized. A great couple of days for everyone involved!
