The New Vito E-Cell

The future of motoring seems to be sustainable energy vehicles like the new Vito E-CELL which, with its permanently energized synchronous motor, is ideally suited for city operation, especially environmentally sensitive areas like the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

The new Vito E-CELL represents a huge step for the Mercedes-Benz brand, placing them at the cutting edge of electric commercial vehicles; an arena they pioneered back in 1972 when they developed their first electricity-powered van.

The Vito E-CELL has been designed with a wide range of environments in mind, so whether you operate within areas of strict access regulation; deliver to other businesses in the ever increasing Low Emission Zones around Europe or even need electric vehicles to operate within workplace premises, with its approximate 80 mile range, around 775kg payload and powerful emission-free battery-powered engine, the Vito E-CELL will become a vehicle of interest to all kinds of businesses with predominantly short-distance traffic requirements: door-to-door deliveries, parcel services or even inner city service, maintenance and breakdown vehicles.

The Vito E-CELL is powered by two high energy density lithium-ion batteries which can be charged through a 3-phase 400v 32A electrical supply using a specifically installed charging station or, from January 2012, from a 240v plug via an adaptor cable. Full recharge from empty will take 6 hours from a charging station or 12 hours from a 240v plug, which will give the electric motor a strong output of 60kW, with torque of 280 Nm; pretty impressive when you consider that's from a standstill! Add to this, in order to extend the Vito E-CELL range as much as possible, the batteries are recharged whilst driving too, through the conversion of braking energy into electricity for the motor, through a process known as recuperation. Mercedes-Benz are the only manufacturer to feature RBS (recuperative braking system) on their vehicles in this Van segment; another first.

Mercedes-Benz has even considered the future of the electrically-powered vehicle market and in this innovative segment new developments are available constantly: with this fast moving market in mind the manufacturer has introduced the Vito E-CELL 'rental model'. In conjunction with Mercedes-Benz Finance the Vito E-CELL is available to hire for a set monthly instalment over four years, limited to a mileage of 50,000 miles; this monthly instalment will include costs for maintenance and repair work with most wear and tear parts as well. At the end of the four year contract, Mercedes-Benz takes your Vito E-CELL back – a real innovation without financial risk.
